Conflict
management and dispute resolution skills are essential for young
people as they complete their high school education and move into
adult life. This lesson provides you with the concepts taught in
the KnowConflict course for high school students. You can go to
the series of eight lessons for parents and the Parent Guide for
activities and discussion pointsto be used in the home.
Lesson
1 introduces three approaches to conflict:

SOFT APPROACH - Characterized by avoidance, ignoring, walking
away |

THE
HARD APPROACH - Characterized by use of power, either physical
or verbal Aggression |

THE
SOLVE THE PROBLEM APPROACH - Characterized by a "win-win" attitude
and interest based negotiation techniques |
Each
approach has benefits and drawbacks depending on the situation.
- The goal is to teach students that they have a choice, and can
learn the factors that will enable them to make a good one!
